What is the best free alternative to the VIES API?
For a few checks a day, call VIES directly or use vatcomply (free, no key, VIES as source). Use W System if you also need retries and a flagged fallback when a member state is down, batches of 100, consultation numbers or an MCP server: 20 free calls per day per IP, or a free key with 500 units a month.
Is there a vatlayer alternative with a free commercial tier?
vatlayer's free plan is 100 requests a month for non-commercial use. W System's free tier and free key have no non-commercial restriction; paid plans start at €19 a month for 5,000 units and stop at the quota instead of charging overages.
Do these APIs return the same validity result?
VIES is the official source for EU VAT numbers. W System and vatcomply query VIES; vatlayer and Abstract say they use the European Commission among several sources. For audits keep the VIES consultation number, which you only get when you send your own VAT number as requester.
Which one works for UK VAT numbers?
