W System / Free Peppol ID lookup by VAT number
Free Peppol ID lookup by VAT number
Short answer: Type an EU VAT number or a Peppol participant id. This page checks whether the company can receive e-invoices over Peppol: it searches the public Peppol Directory and the Peppol SML/SMP (the same DNS lookup Access Points use before sending) and shows the participant id, which BIS 3 documents it accepts, and the country's e-invoicing mandate. Free, no signup.
Key facts
- Sources: Peppol Directory (directory.peppol.eu) first, then Peppol SML (participant.sml.prod.tech.peppol.org) and the participant's SMP. A participant without a Directory business card is still found through the SML.
- Ids tried from a VAT number: the country's VAT scheme (e.g. 9930 DE, 9957 FR), Belgium 0208 (enterprise number), and for NL/EE/LT the registry id (0106 / 0191 / 0200) matched from the VIES name.
- Also shown: VIES validity, name and address (where the member state discloses them), the B2B mandate and the recommended format.
- API:
GET https://api.wsystem.dev/einvoice/route?id=…; MCP tooleinvoice_route. Background: Peppol participant lookup: SML, SMP and a Python example.

Questions and answers
How do I find a company's Peppol ID?
Enter its EU VAT number (e.g. BE0403170701). The page derives the usual Peppol participant ids for that country (for Belgium 0208 + enterprise number, otherwise the 99xx VAT scheme), checks the public Peppol Directory and then the Peppol SML/SMP lookup that Access Points use, and shows the participant id it found.
Why is a company not found although it uses Peppol?
Some countries register companies under a registry id instead of the VAT number (NL 0106 KvK, EE 0191, LT 0200). The lookup also tries the registry id it can match from the VIES name. A company can also be on Peppol under an id we cannot derive (e.g. a GLN, scheme 0088): then ask the customer for their Peppol ID and enter it directly as scheme:value.
Can I enter a Peppol ID instead of a VAT number?
Yes, as scheme:value, e.g. 0208:0403170701 or 0088:5790000435951.
Is it free?
Yes. It uses the free tier of api.wsystem.dev: 20 calls per day per IP without signup, or a free API key with 500 units a month. Each lookup is 1 call.
What else does the result show?
The VIES VAT result, which Peppol BIS 3 document types (invoice, credit note) the participant can receive, the country's B2B e-invoicing mandate with dates and source, and the recommended invoice format.
Is there an API?
GET https://api.wsystem.dev/einvoice/route?id=BE0403170701 returns the same JSON. It is also the einvoice_route tool on the MCP server at https://api.wsystem.dev/mcp/.
